A website doesn’t break all at once. It slowly stops working for you. Fewer enquiries, more people asking questions the site should answer, and a quiet feeling that you’d rather not send people to it.
Here are the signs I look for when a business asks me whether they need a redesign or just a few fixes.
1. You’re embarrassed to share it
If you hesitate before giving out your web address, your visitors probably feel the same thing. First impressions happen fast, and an outdated look makes people wonder if your business is still active.
2. It doesn’t work well on phones
Open your site on your phone. Is the text easy to read without zooming? Are buttons easy to tap? Can someone call you with one tap? Many of your visitors will find you on mobile first.
3. It’s slow
Heavy images, old themes and too many plugins slow a site down. Visitors don’t wait long. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool will show you how your pages perform.
4. Your services have changed
If you’ve added services, dropped others or changed your pricing, and the website still shows the old version, it’s sending the wrong people your way.
5. You can’t update it yourself
Needing a developer to change a phone number or add a photo is a sign the site was built in a way that doesn’t fit how you work.
6. It isn’t bringing in enquiries
A website should do work for you. If people visit and leave without calling or filling in the form, the problem is usually unclear messaging, weak calls to action or a confusing layout. I cover what a homepage needs in how to structure a homepage that gets enquiries.
7. You don’t show up on Google
Missing page titles, thin content, no location pages and poor structure all hold a site back. A redesign is the right moment to fix the foundations properly.
8. Your brand has moved on
New logo, new colours, a new direction? Your website should match what customers see everywhere else.
9. Security warnings or broken parts
Expired security certificates, broken forms and plugins that haven’t been updated in years are real risks. These need attention right away.
Redesign or refresh?
If you checked two or three of these, a refresh might be enough: better copy, faster images and a cleaner homepage. If you checked five or more, a full redesign will usually save you money over patching.
